FAQs
What is a doula?
A doula is a non clinical support person who provides emotional, physical, and informational care during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Unlike a midwife or obstetrician, a doula does NOT provide medical care. Instead, we focus on supporting you as a whole person. This can look like helping you prepare for birth, offering comfort techniques during labour, supporting your partner, or simply holding space during the big and small moments of transition. A doula is there to walk alongside you, so you feel informed, empowered, and never alone.
What’s the difference between a midwife and a doula?
A midwife provides clinical care throughout pregnancy, birth and early postpartum, monitoring the health of you and your baby, and handling any medical concerns in collaboration with other clinical staff. A doula offers non-medical support…emotional, physical, and informational care. We work alongside your care team to make sure you feel seen, heard, and supported every step of the way.
Why hire a doula? What are the benefits?
Hiring a doula means having someone by your side who is there just for you. Whether you’re preparing for birth or settling into life with your baby, a doula offers steady, continuous support to help you feel informed, confident, and cared for. We bring a unique perspective, able to take in the bigger picture of what’s happening around you, notice subtle shifts in your energy or environment, and offer guidance to help you stay grounded and make decisions that feel right for you. Research shows doulas can lead to more positive outcomes in birth and postpartum, but most importantly, we’re here to walk alongside you, holding space, offering reassurance, and reminding you of your strength every step of the way.
Do doulas replace my partner or midwife?
Nope! Not at all. A doula complements your existing support team. We're there to support both you and your partner, helping them feel more confident and involved, while working alongside midwives or medical staff to ensure you feel heard, informed, and cared for.
Do doulas only support unmedicated births or home births?
Nope! While some doulas specialise in a specific birth environment or birth type, many doulas support all kinds of births…hospital, home, birth centre, with or without pain relief. Our role isn’t to push any one kind of birth, it’s to support your choices and help you feel confident and informed, whatever your path looks like.
When should I hire a doula?
Many families choose to hire a doula early in pregnancy to build a strong connection and get support throughout the journey, but it’s never too late. Whether you're just starting to plan your birth or already in the final weeks, you deserve support.
